What are the pros and cons of shingle and shake roofing?

Shingles and wood shakes roofing offer different advantages and disadvantages; here is a list of their pros and cons.

Shingles

Pros:

  • They look very clean
  • They are affordable
  • Asphalt or fibreglass shingles are very durable
  • They can be recycled
  • A wide variety of selections ion terms of types, colors and brands are available
  • Easy to install
  • They don�t need constant maintenance
  • Can be placed over existing roofs

Cons:
  • Can be scarred when exposed to hot weather
  • Can be damaged and blown of by strong winds
  • It doesn�t have the dimensional look of the wood shakes roofing

Shakes

Pros:

  • Looks very natural
  • Very beautiful
  • Very distinct and unique due to a wide variations to be chosen from
  • Good attic insulator
  • Allows house to �breathe�

Cons:
  • Needs constant maintenance and repair
  • Doesn�t have a long life span
  • Not fire retardant
  • Complicated to install
